Vamo vs MyFitnessPal
MyFitnessPal is the biggest food diary there is: more than 20 million foods and a free tier that lets you log by hand for as long as you like. It is not a training app, and its calorie target only changes when you ask it to.
Vamo works the other way round. 99 a month with the barcode scanner included.

The difference
What Vamo does that MyFitnessPal does not
The scanner is not an upsell
Barcode scanning has been Premium-only in MyFitnessPal since October 2022. In Vamo, logging food is free for as long as you have the app, scanner included. The subscription pays for the plan, not the diary.
Targets that move on their own
MyFitnessPal offers to recalculate your goal every ten pounds. Vamo sets calorie and macro targets from your goal and your training, and adjusts the plan as your intake and weigh-ins come in.
The other half of the equation
Food is one input. Vamo also builds the training: periodised gym blocks, running plans from your 5K time, rides from your FTP, and a rewrite of the week from your check-ins. MyFitnessPal's Workout Routines is a diary with a library of routines.
Questions
Vamo or MyFitnessPal?
Is MyFitnessPal free?
The free tier lets you log food and exercise by hand, with ads. The barcode scanner, photo logging and ad removal are Premium features; meal plans and grocery lists are Premium+.
Does MyFitnessPal have workout plans?
It has an exercise diary and a library of routines you can save and log against. It does not describe adaptive programmes that change with your performance. Vamo prescribes sets, reps and working weights, and rewrites the week from your check-ins.
Which is cheaper?
Paid yearly, MyFitnessPal Premium is £64.99 (£5.42 a month) and Premium+ is £79.99. Vamo is £7.99 a month, or £95.88 over a year, with the first 14 days free. MyFitnessPal is cheaper if all you want is a diary. Vamo includes the training and the meal plans.
Can I keep using MyFitnessPal alongside Vamo?
Yes. Vamo does not need a MyFitnessPal account, and Vamo's own food logging, scanner included, is free. Some people keep the diary they know and use Vamo for the plan.
Ready? Vamo.
14 days free. Answer a few questions and your first block is built before you put the phone down. It starts changing from the first session you log.
14 days free, then £7.99 a month. Renews automatically through your Apple ID until you cancel, which you can do any time in your account settings. iPhone only for now.
